Where to buy engagement rings in Melbourne?

Choosing an engagement ring for your partner does take some planning and a lot of research. Choosing a place to also buy the perfect engagement ring is also a process and needs some careful thought.

In Melbourne, there are so many jewellers to choose from, how do you decide without feeling overwhelmed?

At Kalfin, we tailor our design offerings to your individual needs and budget. Because we are a designer locally based in Melbourne, we can ensure exceptional flexibility and value for money for any budget, without compromising quality.

Whether you visit Kalfin or not, you need to have the research under your belt so you can buy with confidence no matter where you buy your engagement ring in Melbourne.

Research of the ring

Engagement ring research, seems silly? Not when you feel stressed and unsure where to even begin when you are looking to buy the perfect engagement ring. Although it shouldn’t be a daunting process, it might seem daunting to begin with if you go to a Melbourne jeweller with no prior research.

Type of ring

When it comes to choosing an engagement ring, there are two important considerations for the ring. These include design and the type of stone/s featured.

When choosing the design type, you have a few to think about (don’t stress if you don’t know what any of these are). But they include:

  • Solitaire
  • Side Stone
  • Halo
  • Trilogy
  • Vintage

Or you might want to consider going with a custom design for your perfect engagement ring.

Stones or diamonds?

Once you have an idea of what design you want for the engagement ring, you also want to ask the question, “stones or diamonds”?

With stones, most of the engagement rings will include at least one diamond, followed by a feature stone like a ruby, emerald or sapphire. Of course, the stones will add colour to the ring, so if you do opt for a stone, it is important to understand whether you and your partner will like a bit of colour in the ring.

When it comes to choosing diamonds for a ring (if you think you will go with just diamonds), always remember, the quality of the diamond comes down to the grading for the 4C’s:

  • Cut
  • Colour
  • Clarity
  • Carat

That doesn't always mean, the bigger the diamond, the higher the quality. What you want to do when choosing a diamond is to consider a few things, this includes where the diamond is sourced from (you want it to be ethically sourced as part of the Kimberley Process) and you want to choose a diamond that is GIA certified. This means the minimum colour grading is "G" and it is graded '100% eye clean' in terms of its clarity.

Don’t worry about trying to remember this all, if you choose to buy your engagement ring in Melbourne with Kalfin, we have you covered when it comes to clarity!

At Kalfin Jewellery, we have over 35 years of design experience with diamond rings and can offer you an obligation-free consultation to explore your needs and design ideas.

How much should you spend on an engagement ring?

The value you put on an engagement ring is of course, priceless when it is chosen by yourself with an experienced jeweller by your side. But you do want to plan for the amount you will be spending on your next investment.

There is no exact figure you should be spending and the “three-month salary” rule is a little outdated. However, there are a few things you can consider before deciding how much you want to spend (you should always have a ball-park figure):

  • What do you and your partner value? You might have a lot of savings, but your partner would prefer you both to spend your money on other things
  • How much time do you have to save and how much savings do you already have?
  • How much would you like to spend on the wedding? (this will give you an indication of how much the ring should be)

There is no right or wrong answer to how much you should actually spend when you are choosing an engagement ring. But if you want to do some more research, we have an article that will help you out. See “How much should you spend on an engagement ring”.

Should you have an engagement ring before you propose?

Another question we get a lot at Kalfin.

“Do I need to have a ring to propose?” Although it is a tradition to have a ring as you pop the question, it isn’t a requirement. You might decide it will be more special for you and your partner to choose a ring together rather than pick it yourself.

However, if you are nervous about choosing the ring, but feel it is important for your relationship to choose it anyway, having an experienced jeweller by your side can make the process a lot less daunting and a lot more enjoyable.

Take the stress away

Getting engaged and planning a proposal for your partner should be one of the happiest and most stress-free experiences of you and your partner’s lives.

Of course, when you first start thinking about proposing you have a lot of added stress, then you have to choose a ring! Some of the most important steps include:

  • Researching the types of rings
  • Researching your partner’s style
  • Finding a jeweller to buy the ring from
